What counts as a character?
Talisman counts characters the way you see them: an accented letter, a flag or an emoji with a skin tone counts as one, even when it is stored as several Unicode code points. Spaces and line breaks count as characters; "without spaces" leaves out all whitespace. Bytes are the size of the text in UTF-8, the encoding used on the web.
How are SMS segments counted?
Texts that only use the GSM-7 alphabet fit 160 characters in one message, or 153 per part when split. A single character outside that alphabet, such as an emoji or a curly quote, switches the whole message to UCS-2, which fits only 70 characters (67 per part). Characters like € [ ] { } count twice in GSM-7. The tool lists the characters that force Unicode so you can replace them.
How does X count post length?
X allows 280 weighted characters. Most Latin characters count as 1; Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters and emoji count as 2; every link counts as 23, whatever its length.
Is my text private?
Yes. Counting runs in WebAssembly on your device. Your text is never uploaded, stored or logged. Title and meta description limits are guides: search engines actually truncate by pixel width, so keep the most important words first.
